Dried Pea grenades (pyro) were developed by TLSFx of the United Kingdom in the past few years, and have been a big hit overseas, as now they are becoming more commonplace in the US due to their popularity. For some, they think the addition of pyro to a wooded/flammable area is too dangerous, as well as the loud report they displace when detonated. For the rest without tampons shoved up their vaginas, these add an exciting element of explosions to the airsoft world.
DB levels from these are around 125-130 dB, as per tests with a sound meter. The M84, the standard issue flashbang, emit 170dB, and the newly popular Thunder B Stun grenades pop out a whopping 160dB depending on environment, humidity yada yada yada.
On to the pyro. In essence, these grenades are glorified party poppers with fuses. The actual explosion is yielded from approx 1.4 grams of explosive material, enough to burst the cardboard casing and disperse the peas/powder.
Here is a good video on how they actually function:
To they're effect on a close quarters detonation:
To an outright badass advertisement:
Originally these were on sale on eBay, and at a website called www.tacticalcorestore.com. However, these outlets for buying them have since shut down/are being maintenanced. after a deal of searching, I found the haven for all your explosive needs in airsoft. That being www.ricochetdirect.com, an Indiana-based distributor for the UK company, TLSFx. Due to the nature of this site, they won't sell to most consumers, because it is a direct distributor for airsoft stores in the US. (Secret: Just use a team name followed by "airsoft" as your company name, and you should be in the clear. EG: Boston Airsoft)
Due to how awesome they are, these puppies will run you a pretty penny. 70 bucks minimum after shipping. However, buying in bulk with friends will save you a lot of money. Minimum orders for these guys is 40, and at 5 bucks a pop, do the math.
Your best bet if you just are trying their products out, would be to buy a sampler pack in the special offers section. Included in that offer is four striker-cap grenades, four thermobaric stun grenades, and 4 smoke grenades. The prices range from 35-50 dollars depending on the size of the smoke grenade (30, 60, 90 second). The expensive part comes not from the actual price, but the shipping. You will pay a 35 dollar flat rate for Hazmat shipping. So, again, do the math.
These would def. be awesome for an area other than Saratoga, as I think the close proximity to housing would be a problem. (Same reason I wouldn't want to use smoke bombs back there...)
